It is situated in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is believed that Christ was crucified at this very site and also buried.

It is also therefore significant as it is believed to be the site of Christ’s miraculous resurrection.

Yet little known to many, thanks to a tradition dating back to the 1100s, a Muslim opens and closes the doors to the church each day.

The Joudeh family were entrusted to be custodians of the key and the Nuseibeh family assigned to be the doorkeepers.

Til this day, the tradition stands. Each day, a member from the Nuseibeh family and a member from Joudeh family arrive at the doors of the Church in the early hours of the morning.

The Joudeh family member hands the key to the Nuseibeh family member, who knocks on the door. Priests from inside the Church pass a ladder out through a porthole to allow the unlocking of the upper part of the huge door.

They keys are then handed back to the Joudeh family member.

In the evening, the whole process is done backwards.
