Did You Know More People Live In Caves In China Than The Australian Population?

How about that for a stat. Over 30 million people in China live in caves. That’s more than the total population of Australia!

Living In Caves In China

In China they are referred to as Yaodongs. Despite being the place of residence for mainly the poor population, the caves also appeal to the wider population.

The reason being that in the summer the climate in the caves is cool and in the winter it is warm. There is also an element of safety in the caves in that crime levels are low.

Some caves are better developed than others. Many even have running water and electricity coming through. Families have adjacent caves with doorways in between to allow easy access.
