Did You Know In 19th Century Great Britain, Attempted Suicide Was Punishable By Hanging?

Suicide was not seen as something acceptable in the 19th century, especially in Great Britain. So much so that attempted suicide would mean you would be sentenced to death by hanging.

The irony of course being the person attempting to kill themselves would get what they want either way.

Under today’s law, it is no longer seen as a criminal offence in Great Britain. The same is true for most European countries. In the US, though it is not illegal, there can be penalties for attempting suicide.

In some strict Christian and Islamic countries however it is still seen as unacceptable and is a punishable criminal offence.
