At the time of writing (June 2013), Jeanne Calment is the oldest recorded and verified person to have lived in history. There may have been some people who lived longer, but their case may not have been recorded or proved.

Jeanne Calment lived for 122 years and 164 days. She was born on 21 February 1875 and lived until 4 August 1997.

She accomplished many things in life such as meeting the artist Vincent Van Goph. What she also managed to do was smoke cigarettes for 96 years of her life!

Calment smoked cigarettes from the age of 21 until the age of 117. This baffles many as surely cigarettes affect life span negatively. Who knows maybe if she hadn’t smoked she may have lived a lot longer.

Calment shared her secrets to her long life and youthful appearance however. She put it down to pouring olive oil over all her food as well as rubbing it on her skin. Port wine was part of her diet as well as a kilogram of chocolate per week!
