Did You Know Sonic Hedgehog Is A Protein Found In Mammals?

Yep, sonic hedgehog is a protein that is found in mammals like us humans. Sonic the Hedgehog is the game character most of us are more familiar with.

Sonic Hedgehog Protein

In us humans, the sonic hedgehog protein is coded by the sonic hedgehog gene. In mammals, this protein is involved in the signalling pathway.

It comes from a family of three proteins all involved in the signalling pathway. The other two proteins are the Indian hedgehog and the desert hedgehog.

The name for the protein has been under scrutiny in recent years as health professionals are left with the daunting task of trying to explain to patients with problems with the protein, that they have a defect with their sonic hedgehog gene.
